The Catering Committee was created last year with the objective of checking the quality of the services offered by the foodservice company the school has contracted, from the utensils used to menu preparation. It is chaired by Lisanka Marinheiro.
In an effort to improve the children's satisfaction with regard to the meals served at school, the PTA organised a survey in 2000, in which the children were asked to state their food preferences. Armed with this information some changes were instituted which have already had positive results.
Some of the more popular choices were included like lettuce, iceberg lettuce and curly lettuce instead of Chinese cabbage and endive; tomatoes are used daily in the salads; carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, potato, manioc root, corn and peas, which received the most votes, are now served more often. Also pasta, fish and chicken (a popular item), are served more frequently. The salads are prepared differently now, on separate platters instead of all mixed together and the dressings are served separately.
We would like to stress that the changes made have not compromised the nutritional integrity of the meals, but have merely made them more palatable to the children.
The changes have shown immediate results and according to the purchasing department at Sodexho, the caterers, there has been a significant increase in the volume of greens and vegetables purchased for the school. We are keeping an eye on things...
Many thanks to all those who cooperated.
Here is the result of our survey.
